Zelenskyy: Ukraine ran out of missiles to protect destroyed Trypilska station

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in the interview for PBS published on 16 April that Russian forces managed to destroy the Trypilska thermal power plant because Ukraine had completely run out of missiles for the air defense systems protecting the facility. “Some 11 missiles were flying at the Trypilska TPP. Ukraine’s air defenses destroyed the first seven, and four destroyed the Trypilska TPP. Why? Because we had zero missiles left. We ran out of all the missiles protecting the Trypilska TPP,” Zelenskyy provided an example.


Zelenskyy signs bill on mobilisation

On Tuesday 16 April, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law on improving certain issues of mobilization, military registration and military service. The signed bill shall be published in the official parliamentary publication. The law takes effect one month after it is published.


Nearly 37,000 people remain missing in Ukraine amid Russian invasion

The Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, said on 16 April that in Ukraine, nearly 37,000 people are missing, among whom are children, civilians, and military personnel. The Ombudsman also said that Ukraine had verified about 1,700 people whom Russia has illegally detained. Only 147 civilian hostages have been able to return home.


Public activist Pavlo Petrychenko killed in combat zone

Pavlo Petrychenko, a famous public activist and sergeant of the 59th Brigade, was killed in Donetsk region while performing a combat mission. Pavlo Petrychenko was a participant in public initiatives before the war. He was involved in the development of Serhii Prytula's volunteer center in March 2022, and in April he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine.


PACE adopts resolution to use Russian assets for Ukraine’s reconstruction

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) unanimously adopted a resolution on 16 April 2024, supporting the reconstruction of Ukraine. The resolution, supported by all 134 participants at the meeting, focuses on transferring frozen Russian assets to an international compensation fund designated for restoring Ukraine’s damaged infrastructure. It also calls for the creation of an international claims commission to adjudicate claims related to damages caused by Russian aggression.


Johnson introduces separate bills to help Ukraine and Israel

US House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday has introduced four separate bills on aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and national security priorities. Two Republican lawmakers who were at the meeting said the plan is to move four bills under one procedural rule that would allow for amendments. The fourth bill, related to national security, as one Republican lawmaker said, would include a ban on TikTok, a provision that would allow the US to use confiscated Russian assets to help Ukraine, a lend-lease act for military aid, and convertible loans for humanitarian aid.
