Ukraine aims to create Kursk ‘buffer zone,’ Zelenskyy says

Ukraine’s military incursion into Kursk aims to create a “buffer zone” to prevent cross-border attacks by Moscow’s forces, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Sunday, as his troops blew up a second bridge in the Russian border region to cut Russia’s supply lines.


Ukraine controls 92 settlements in Russia's Kursk region

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Ukrainian forces controlled more than 1,250 square kilometers and 92 settlements in Russia's Kursk region. He urged Ukraine's allies to permit Western weapons strikes deep inside Russia, saying the lack of that permission was the main reason for Ukraine not being able to stop Moscow troop advances on the frontline in the east.


Kyiv confirms Modi's upcoming visit to Ukraine

Ukraine's Presidential Office confirmed on August 19 the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ukraine. Modi's arrival will take place on August 23, the statement read. The visit, which was first announced by Indian media in July, will be the first Indian prime minister's trip to Ukraine in the history of bilateral relations between the two nations.


Russian oil depot in Rostov Oblast still ablaze day after Ukrainian drone attack

Firefighters in the Russian city of Proletarsk are still working to extinguish a fire at the Kavkaz oil depot, where oil products for the Russian army were stored, a day after it was attacked by drones. Russian authorities have declared a state of emergency in the area.


Children to be mandatorily evacuated from Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk 

Serhii Dobriak, Head of the Pokrovsk City Military Administration, said on 19 August that given the timing of the Russian army's advance, people in Pokrovsk have one or two weeks to flee. All services and facilities are currently operational in Pokrovsk, but Dobriak expects that they will soon have to close.


German defense industry stocks fall amid discussion over aid to Ukraine

Disputes in the German government regarding further assistance to Ukraine and its cost led to a significant drop in the share prices of German arms manufacturers, according to the Spiegel. The price decrease comes as negotiations in Germany's defense sector suggest that the German government may not yet commit extra funding for military support to Ukraine.
