Ukraine's military lacks strength to retake some occupied territories, diplomacy needed, Zelenskyy says

Ukraine might have to liberate some Russian-held territories through diplomatic means after the country's NATO membership becomes certain, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with Kyodo News on December 1. "Our army lacks the strength to do that. That is true," Zelenskyy told the Japanese news agency regarding the liberation of territories held by Russia since 2014, including Crimea. "We do have to find diplomatic solutions," he said, adding that liberation by force could be considered when Ukraine is strong enough to prevent new aggression by Russia.


'We need to move faster,' Zelenskyy announces personnel changes in the Armed Forces

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on December 2 new reshuffles in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Zelenskyy's statement follows General Mykhailo Drapatyi's appointment as Ukraine's Ground Forces commander. When asked why Drapatyi has replaced Oleksandr Pavliuk, who has held the position since February 11, 2024, Zelensky said the change is related to the recently presented resilience plan.


Scholz announces weapons supplies worth €650 million in Kyiv

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who arrived in Kyiv on the morning of Monday, 2 December, has announced new weapons deliveries for Ukraine worth €650 million. "Ukraine can rely on Germany. We say what we do and we do what we say," he pointed out.

Putin approves 2025 budget with massive defense spending

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on 1 December approving the 2025 federal budget and draft budgets for 2026-2027, with a striking emphasis on national security expenditures that could have significant geopolitical implications. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the budget for 2025 allocates approximately 41 percent of Russia’s annual expenditures to national defense and security sectors.
