Russian Defence Ministry reports drone attacks in Moscow and Leningrad regions
Russian air defense allegedly shot down drones in Moscow and Leningrad regions. Air defense systems allegedly were also seen operating in the Belgorod region. It was the first time a drone attack had taken place in the Leningrad region. Russian Telegram channels report that the drone fell on the territory of the St Petersburg oil terminal and exploded there. Ukraine’s Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin confirmed that a Ukrainian-made drone hit St. Petersburg last night. It flew as far as 1,250 kilometers.
France finalizing security agreement with Ukraine — Macron
France is nearing completion on a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine, following the example set by the UK, French President Emmanuel Macron said at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Macron added that there is strong coordination between Ukraine and NATO members, which has led to the proposal of signing bilateral agreements with some key alliance members. These agreements would ensure Ukraine’s security and would not be dependent on NATO membership.
France to provide Ukraine with AASM Hammer precision-guided munitions and increase shell supplies
Monthly, Ukraine will receive about 50 hybrid bombs adapted to Soviet aircraft models, announced French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu on the France Inter television channel. "We have managed to adapt them for use from Soviet-model aircraft. We will deliver 50, starting in January, until 2024," the minister said. France also plans to produce 78 Caesar guns for the Ukrainian army. "Currently, Ukraine has 49 guns of this type, which have achieved tactical success. Our goal is to produce 78 Caesar guns in 2024," Lecornu said.
Russians launch 33 Shahed drones on Ukraine, 22 downed
The Russians attacked Ukraine overnight on 17-18 January using 33 Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs, with Ukrainian air defense managing to destroy 22 of these Russian targets. Air defense systems were responding in Sumy, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad and Khmelnytskyi regions.Source
Biden and Congress leaders "discuss strategic consequences of inaction"
US President Joe Biden has met with the Congressional Leadership and members of the House of Representatives in order to discuss the urgent need to allocate funds for Ukraine. During the meeting Biden stressed the importance of Congress providing Ukraine with the resources it needs, including air defense and artillery, to protect itself from Russia’s brutal invasion. The US President also "discussed the strategic consequences of inaction for Ukraine, the US and the world".
