Il-76 aircraft crashes in Russia's Belgorod, Russian claims it carried Ukrainian POWs

An IL-76 aircraft crashed in the Korocha district of Russia’s Belgorod region. Russian officials claimed that the plane carried a group of Ukrainian prisoners of war for the exchange. The Ministry of Defense blamed Ukraine for this attack. Later famous Russian propagandist Margarita Simonian published a ‘list’ of 65 Ukrainian POWs, who died in a crash. At the same time it contains a lot of mistakes: at least a dozen of them were already exchanged. Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence has reported that the prisoner exchange scheduled for 24 January did not take place. It has no information on whether there were Ukrainian prisoners on board the aircraft. The safety of the Ukrainian soldiers, according to the agreements, should have been ensured by the Russian side. At the same time, the Ukrainian side had not been informed of the need to ensure the security of the airspace near Belgorod within a specific time frame, as has previously been done. The General Staff of Ukraine reported that Russia previously used Il-76 in Belford region to transport rockets to attack Kharkiv and other cities near the border. It is worth mentioning that back in 2022 Russia executed more than 50 Ukrainian POWs in Olenivka prison, also blaming Ukraine for the attack.

The meeting took place against the background of Robert Fico's statements about a "territorial compromise" between Ukraine and Russia. After the meeting, they agreed that the Slovak government would not block Ukraine's purchase of weapons and equipment from Slovak businesses. Ukraine and Slovakia will cooperate on the supply of equipment from a Slovak company for the construction of defense borders.
