Biden apologizes to Zelenskyy for congressional delays to US aid

U.S. President Joe Biden met Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris on Friday, apologized for congressional delays in approving the latest U.S. aid package, and announced a fresh $225 million tranche on the sidelines of D-Day events. The meeting was their first face-to-face encounter since Zelenskyy visited Washington in December. They will meet again next week at a G7 summit in Italy, as rich Western nations discuss using Russian assets frozen after the Ukraine invasion to provide $50 billion for Ukraine.


European Commission says Ukraine ready to start accession talks

The European Commission supported the start of accession talks with Ukraine, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on June 7. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported that the EU's executive arm confirmed that both Ukraine and Moldova "have fully completed all steps to start talks."


Russians target critical infrastructure overnight

On the night of 6-7 June, Russian forces targeted Ukrainian critical infrastructure facilities with 5 cruise missiles and 53 Shahed-131/136 loitering munitions. Ukrainian air defense units shot down all missiles and 48 Shaheds.


France to provide Ukraine with Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets and train pilots

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the transfer of several French Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine and the training of additional Ukrainian military personnel as part of a new cooperation with Kyiv. To train the pilots to fly the Mirage 2000-5, France will organize six-month pilot training courses starting this summer, Macron said. In addition, Paris will help train a 4,500-strong Ukrainian brigade, which Macron stressed is "not an escalation factor."


Producer of Caesar howitzers to set up branch in Ukraine

European arms company KNDS announced on June 7 the establishment of a branch in Ukraine, the French TV channel BFM reported. KNDS produces Leopard tanks and Caesar self-propelled howitzers, both of which Kyiv has in service, and other military vehicles. It is headquartered in Amsterdam and owned by German and French arms producers.
