Kidnaping in the Occupied Territories: the story of the disappearance of a child in Manhush

Members of the armed forces of the Russian Federation have been accused of committing various crimes.

As of 6 March 2023, Ukraine was officially investigating 171 cases of rape of Ukrainian citizens by the Russian military, including 13 children.

If law enforcement agencies in the occupied territories have the capacity to investigate these incidents, collect evidence and interview witnesses, there is a pressing problem of lack of legal protection in the occupied territories of Ukraine, impartial investigation and punishment for crimes if the suspects are Russian military or illegal units under its control.

One of the most screaming cases was the disappearance of a 12-year-old girl in the village of Manhush, Donetsk region, near the occupied city of Mariupol. According to reports from the Social networks, including local Telegram channels, we will try to reconstruct this story.

On 2 July, a girl was reported missing in the town of Manhush. The incident allegedly occurred on 30 June. According to the mother, her daughter, Ira, a seventh-grade student, left the house at 3:00 p.m., then disappeared in an unknown direction.

According to local residents, the girl could have been abducted by passing Russian troops. The occupation police, according to their own reports, did not want to investigate the case immediately, citing that the child could have simply gone for a walk. This can be corroborated by an APB sent by the occupation police, most likely only on 2 July, when it appeared in the office.

The published document also contains an orientation on the vehicle on which the kidnappers could move. CCTV footage shows a military truck that could possibly be the Ural 432009, armed with the Russian Army.

Already on July 3, in the city’s online chat rooms, which are controlled by representatives of the occupation police, as well as the so-called "MGB" (Ministry of State Security, the so-called "DPR"), there was information that the girl was a victim of an accident, has been injured and is currently in hospital.

The communication was circulated by the chat room administrators, who represent the occupying forces. They also said that the participants in the accident were indeed Russian military, and the car indicated in the orientation was found at a permanent location in the village of the Republic, approximately 26 km from Manhush.

However, the death of the girl was reported the next day. The accident reports have been removed from local chats and the circumstances of the death have not been disclosed by the occupation authorities.

The involvement in the death of a Russian military girl was in fact repeatedly confirmed by the occupation police itself. According to preliminary information, the body of the girl was found near the village of the Republic, where the Russian military is based.

Journalists learned that on June 30 a schoolgirl went to meet with friends. The girl was not initially wanted. And then, when my mom started going to the occupation checkpoints and showing pictures, the situation got public.

According to one version, the girl was hit by a Russian military vehicle. He put the body on the car and took it to the field, where it was found. " These are not rare cases when children and adults disappear, no one investigates these cases, because the law does not apply to the Russian occupiers," the Mariupol City Council notes.

However, the second version involves targeted assassination. Ukrainian pranksters were able to call one of the administrators of Manhush Telegram-channels, posing as assistants of the famous Russian propagandist, military correspondent, Yuri Kotenk. The administrator has been identified. His name is Vladimir, and he is an employee of one of the bodies of the occupation administration of Manhush. His phone number says so. This number is registered by the operator Military Telecom - performs maintenance, repair of IT infrastructure, communications of military equipment, communication lines and means of radio-electronic combat of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

According to the information he provided, along the road the girl walked along, there are many houses with surveillance cameras. Around 3:00, the girl entered the bridge, where a military vehicle stopped.

The girl was then put in a truck and taken to an unknown destination.

"You can see the girl walking and walking, but near the bridge, well, see: "Hey, Girl, can I talk to you for a minute?". She was not caught, she was not chased, just politely and culturally. Just taken, thrown in the car and all.. Well, there are a lot of rapes... They just grabbed her, took her away, and the police didn’t move until the next day," the so-called official said.

He also reported that the girl was found on a billing mobile phone.

Unfortunately, it is still unknown whether anyone has been punished for this crime. Similarly, there is no information on the results of the investigation into the girl’s death. This fact remains one of the proofs of kidnapping and Russian crimes against civilians in the occupied territory of Ukraine.
